How to Join Tamworth Strollers

Our History

From Wilnecote to Tamworth – The Strollers’ Journey

In the winter of 2018 and following on from a 10 week walking football program under the supporting framework of Tamworth Borough Councils Sports Development Team, the individuals taking part in those football sessions had a decision to make.

On 23rd March 2018 a meeting was arranged at Wilnecote Leisure Centre to discuss the next steps going forward.

Eleven individuals attended the meeting and it was opened with the statement taken from the minutes of that first meeting:-

“As we are all aware Tamworth Borough Council have supported us on the Walking Football sessions over the last 10 weeks, as this support finished last weekend we must decide what we are going to do from now on”.

A vote was taken and unanimously decided to form an affiliated walking football club, hence Wilnecote Strollers WFC was formed with its new Committee of Chris Bradshaw, Secretary,  and Paul Barber,Treasurer.

Wilnecote Leisure Centre became the venue for training sessions to be held on Friday evenings.

As the membership continued to grow in numbers and with some members expressing a desire to play competitive football, the first friendly game was arranged on 19th July 2018 against Suttons Finest at Bishop Walsh School. The match day squad that day being Dave Malpas, Chris Bradshaw, Dave Harper, Pete Harper, Ian Gibbons, James Murphy, Dave Iliffe, Mark Beard, Mal Diamond, Paul Guinan and Mick Wood. At the time of writing this, some of those listed are still active members of Tamworth Strollers.

A New Chapter with Competitive Teams and a Strong Community Legacy

After the untimely and unexpected death of Chris Bradshaw on 31st May 2020, a new Committee was formed with Dave Iliffe as Secretary. On 7th September 2020 a second training session at a new outdoor 3G pitch at Tamworth Enterprise College was arranged for Monday evenings so providing members with all year round sessions indoors and outdoors.

Team manager and training sessions organiser Roy Wilcox provided a good structure to both the social football for our training sessions and for the competitive league teams that were now competing in the Birmingham Walking Football League, 50s and 57s. His untimely death on February 28th 2022 was a sad day for all.

The growth of membership continues and a new Committee was elected in March 2024 with Dave Iliffe as Chairman, Brendan Fitzgerald Secretary, Trevor Jones Treasurer and Bob Bayley, Welfare. It was decided at that AGM that the name of the club be changed to Tamworth Strollers Walking Football Club, with the purpose of attracting members from the  Tamworth area and to rebrand the club with a new identity to represent the Town as opposed to a local area within the Town. A new badge was designed depicting Tamworth Castle and team colours changed from the Wilnecote Strollers black and white stripes to the new Tamworth Strollers red with white detailing. Tamworth Strollers Walking Football Club was enrolled as an FA Affiliated Club in July 2024.

We now have teams competing in age groups 50s 57s and 63s for season 2024/25.
